Summer is the perfect time to explore new fibers, fresh techniques, and light, breezy projects. Do you have a tried-and-true method for processing plant fibers, a foolproof guide to scouring fleece, or tips for staying cool and comfortable with your handspun when the weather heats up?
Warm weather is also a great season for outdoor fiber activities. Have you perfected the art of solar dyeing—warming up your fibers with the heat of the sun while you stay nice and cool in the shade? What’s the most accessible way to get into using your home-grown natural dyes? Do you have a way to make a big scouring project feel more manageable? Perhaps you have a favorite setup for processing bast fibers, or tips for retting, braking, and hackling. We want to hear your best ideas!
How do you transform dirty wool into something spinnable? Photos by Matt Graves unless otherwise noted
What’s the story behind Tencel, Modal, and Lyocell? Is it all just rayon, or is there more to these fibers? We’re looking for articles that explore what they are, what they’re good for, and any special strategies for working with them.
What’s your go-to summer knitting project? Share your designs with us!
We’re also looking for articles and projects that celebrate the spirit of summer spinning. Whether you’re designing airy handspun garments, experimenting with lightweight construction, or creating portable projects that are perfect for swim meets, stadiums, and other summer adventures, we’d love to see how you make the most of the season.

Not ready to write a whole article but want to see your work in print? The Spin Off team loves seeing all the ways our community members engage with the Tour de Fleece. We’d love to hear how you participate in this yearly event, whether you spin every day, join in when you can, or are taking part for the first time.
Selected responses will be featured in an upcoming issue of Spin Off as well as on our Instagram page. Every spinner’s TdF experience is unique, and we’d love to help you inspire fellow spinners.
